The producer

Who are they?

The Mazzei family has been producing wine at Castello di Fonterutoli, in the heart of Chianti Classico, since 1435. Still run by the family today, the estate is one of the region’s historic properties. In Castellina in Chianti, its vineyards cover roughly 110 hectares and are divided into more than a hundred parcels located between 220 and 570 metres in altitude. This diversity of soils, exposures and altitudes allows the estate to work Sangiovese in several expressions. Fonterutoli remains the estate’s emblematic and most widely distributed cuvée, offering a particularly interesting entry point to the Chianti Classico style.

Their approach

What sets them apart.

01

A mosaic of parcels

The vineyards are divided into numerous parcels worked separately to preserve differences in soil, altitude and exposure.

02

Sangiovese at the centre

Sangiovese is the estate’s central grape and forms the base of its different expressions of Chianti Classico.

03

Territory and identity

The estate’s work aims to showcase Fonterutoli’s natural diversity, notably its limestone and marl soils and its significant altitude variations.

Why we follow them.

Because Fonterutoli makes Chianti Classico accessible through a historic house that remains a key reference for the appellation. Its classic cuvée is an excellent starting point to recognize Sangiovese — its acidity, red fruit and its natural ability to accompany Italian cuisine.
