Pizza

With pizza, look for freshness above all: a fruity red with bright acidity often works better than a very powerful red.

The pairing

Why it
works.

Tomato brings acidity, cheese brings fat, and toppings can quickly add salt, spice or smokiness. A fresh, fruity wine keeps everything lively without weighing down each bite.

A classic tomato pizza especially suits fresh Italian reds like Chianti or Valpolicella. A Gamay is an excellent choice when you want something lighter. And sparkling wines are much more versatile than people think, especially with a white pizza, cheese or richer toppings.

In practice

Don't pick your wine based on the crust. Look mainly at what's on it. Tomato and pepperoni? Fresh red. White pizza and cheese? Try sparkling wines.
